Kim McCartney’s story is one of vision, perseverance and determination. Prior to acquiring AV Business Communication Systems in September 2005, Kim had worked at the company for 17 years, starting as a data entry clerk, and working her way up through bookkeeping, controller and then chief financial officer. Kim was familiar with the company from the inside and was convinced that she could turn the company around by paying more attention to employee morale and ensuring that the company stayed current with new technology.

The company supplies, installs and maintains communications systems, data and cabling infrastructures and Voice Over IP solutions for business customers. Their client base includes 30+ locations for Prudential Fox & Roach Realtors and over 70 locations for school districts and municipalities throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. Their competitive advantage is in competitive pricing as well as quality of service, as evidenced by the referrals from existing customers.

When Kim was considering acquiring this business in May 2005 she was advised by her father to seek some professional advice, and he recommended the Small Business Development Center at Rutgers-Camden. “In the beginning I felt overwhelmed with the process of business acquisition, as well as the process of preparing a business plan in order to apply for financing. With the guidance given to me by the Camden SBDC, and specifically Steve Applebaum, CPA, I was able to overcome these obstacles, resulting in a professionally/properly prepared business plan. Without the help of the Camden SBDC and Steve Applebaum my objective may not have ended on as positive a note as it did. The SBDC truly helps one who wants to be a Small Business Owner.”

At the time of acquisition this business was struggling financially. Kim recognized that the business was still viable, and even though her first loan application was turned down, she contacted another lender and an SBA loan for $150,000 was approved by Sun Bank to finance the acquisition. Since the acquisition the company is profitable and is on target to generate $1 million in sales in 2006 (an increase of 20 percent). Kim not only preserved five jobs, but added a sixth position, and is now in the process of adding another sales position as well.
